Community Engagement Workshops

Community Engagement Workshops give learners training, information and support.  Literacy Source presents workshops and field trips that teach about community involvement and service while improving language skills. And they are fun! We’ve done workshops on:

  • Voter rights and responsibilities
  • Legal issues for refugees and immigrants
  • Healthcare and nutrition
  • Getting ready for an emergency
  • First aid training, including CPR and poison control
  • Learning how to manage your money
  • Taxes
  • Parenting
  • Celebrating and exploring culture
  • Potlucks and movies

Upcoming Workshops:

  • Stress Management Workshop

    5:00-6:00 p.m.
    National Union of Eritrean Women-Seattle
Presenter: Scott Moser, Bastyr University ND student

In this hour-long workshop, participants will learn about what stress is, what can happen if it is left unchecked, and how to manage it more effectively.  Participants will identify the major stressors in their lives and things that could make us more vulnerable to stress.  Finally, participants will practice strategies for alleviating and managing stress in their lives.

Past Workshops:

On November 2nd students in our morning classes received an impromptu visit from Mayoral candidate, Joe Mallahan. Students introduced themselves to Joe and asked him questions about issues concerning them. That evening, Cristal Wood, a volunteer from the League of Women Voters, spoke to Literacy Source students and volunteers about the November 3rd election. Students had the opportunity to discuss the initiatives and learn more about the voting process, from registration to filling out a ballot. On election day, students participated in a mock election at Literacy Source. Click here to see the results of the mock election!

On October 3rd Literacy Source volunteer, Trena Redman, presented Eat Healthy! a nutrition workshop to the National Union of Eritrean Women – Seattle.  Eighteen participants learned basic nutrition information, including definitions of common nutrients and their roles in the body, learned how to read nutrition labels on packaging, and discussed how to make healthy choices by comparing food labels.  Participants also received information to help them set nutrition goals and determine their BMI (Body Mass Index) and daily caloric needs.
