Adult Basic Education

home

Adult Basic Education services are for adult learners who speak English but want to improve their reading, writing, math or computer skills – to get ready for the GED, transition to community colleges and vocational schools, and more. ABE services include one-to-one tutoring, where one student learns from one teacher, a reading skills class called “Reading Tools for Life” and others (see below). These classes all take place at our Fremont center and are FREE to adults who qualify based on where they live and their income. If you don’t qualify for Literacy Source services, we can tell you about other learning programs.

If you are interested in ABE, please call us. We’ll ask you some questions about yourself and what you would like to learn, and then schedule an appointment for testing so we can find out what classes would be best for you. We prefer students to call us themselves, but you may ask a friend to call for you if necessary.

ABE Classes

In these classes, students learn in small groups with one or two teachers. Some are like a “lab” while others are more structured, like a lecture. Please call for more information and to make an appointment to register.

Public Speaking & Presentation Skills: Thursdays 4-5:30 p.m.
This class is designed for students who want to improve their ability to speak in front of small and large groups. You will get more confidence and improve your communication skills.

Math Tools for Life: Monday 5:00-7:00pm
In this class, students get math practice in a small group. Two teachers walk around the classroom to help students practice math topics they want help with. This class is especially helpful in preparing you to take the GED and EDP.

Math & Science Tools for Life: Tuesday 7:00-8:30pm
In this class, students get both math and science instruction. They will have mini-lectures on both topics and then practice what they learned in class. This class is especially helpful if you are preparing for  the GED and EDP.

Reading Tools for Life: Monday 3:30-5:00pm, Tuesday 12:30-2:00 pm OR Thursday 12:30-2:00pm
In this class, students of all levels listen to recordings of books and learn to read with ease and understanding. The recordings give students an example of excellent English by native speakers. Learners follow along silently with the recording and then read the same words out loud while teachers and volunteers help them speak with natural rhythm, intonation and word stress. This class helps students read better, understand more, learn new words and improve their pronunciation.

GED-i On-line: Self-Study
This online course is a good resource for adults comfortable with computers whose schedule does not allow for attendance at regular classes, or for those attending classes who need additional practice. It is also helpful if you are already working with a tutor, but need more structure to work toward getting your GED. You work at your own pace, take pre- and post- tests and see whether you are prepared to take the GED.
