ESL Tutoring at Literacy Source

Immigrant and refugee students who are eligible can get free tutoring in English at Literacy Source. One student meets with one tutor twice a week for 1 ½ hours each time, a total of 3 hours of tutoring each week. Your tutor will help you improve your listening, speaking, writing and reading and help you reach your specific goals, like talk to your child’s teacher, get a better job, or get a driver’s license.

Our volunteer tutors are trained to teach adult refugee and immigrant learners with different levels of English skills. Students and tutors talk about and agree on the goals for their sessions. As students learn more, they can set new goals with their tutors. Tutors and students pick a time to meet for their lessons when Literacy Source is open: Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Who can work with a tutor?
            18 years or older
            Immigrant or refugee
People who plan to remain in the U.S.
            Low income students
Beginning level and pre-literate students are matched with tutors first

If you want to work with a tutor, you must agree to:

Continue with tutoring for at least one year.
Come regularly. If you are late or miss a session without telling staff or your tutor, you can be dropped from the program.
Take English tests every 5 months or after 45 hours of tutoring.

If you want to be matched with a tutor, you will be put on a waiting list. While you are waiting for a tutor, if you can, you should take a class and study English on your own with Rosetta Stone software on the computer.

How do I sign up?
Call 206.782.2050 or send an email to ESL@literacysource.org  to set an appointment. This first meeting, called an “intake,” lasts 2-3 hours and includes a tour of our office, filling out forms and testing your English. Then you are put on the waiting list for a tutor. Most students are matched with a tutor within 2 months, though it can take longer. Students improve their English more quickly if they go to classes as well as meet with a tutor, so please attend classes if you can.
