Annual Picnic

Don’t miss out on our annual celebration of the volunteers, students, board members, and staff who make Literacy Source a vibrant and mission-driven organization!  It will be held on August 14 from 5:00- 8:30pm at Gas Works Park. Bring your family or a friend, a dish to share, musical instruments, and outdoor games. This is a great opportunity to connect with other learners and volunteers at the Center.  We’ll also be passing out copies of the Bridge to Literacy anthology, which has collection of writing from students, staff, and volunteers and pictures from this past year.  Don’t miss it!  If you have questions or would like to RSVP, e-mail americorps@literacysource.org or call 206-782-2050.

Community Fruit Tree Harvest

Come join us on Tuesday, July 29th from 2:30-4:30 to pick fruit from local trees with Solid Ground's Community Fruit Tree Harvest. Meet in the Fremont Library Meeting Room where Gail Savina will give us a brief orientation to the program. We will then go pick some ripe local fruit and donate it to community food bank. RSVP to americorps@literacysource.org.

* In the event that the fruit is not ripe, we will still meet on the 29th to learn about the Harvest Project and future opportunities to volunteer.

4th Annual Adult Literacy Week in Washington - October 19-25, 2008

Better Skills. Better Jobs. Better Lives.

This is the fourth year the governor of Washington State has set aside the third week of October as Adult Literacy Week.

Efforts to raise understanding and support for adult basic education among thought leaders and social influencers, a goal of the long-term plan for ABE, have grown more effective each year.  This has resulted in broader support for adult basic education than we have ever experienced.

Support Literacy during Adult Literacy Week!

Closures
Snow Closure Policy In the event of snow or inclement weather, please listen to the radio or TV stations or visit www.seattleschools.org for information about Seattle Public School closures.  If B.F. Community Engagement Workshop - Using the Pharmacy

Three University of Washingotn School of Pharmacy students presented information on what pharmacists do, how to read a prescription label, and the differences among over the counter, behind the counter, and prescription drugs. There was a slide presentation and an opportunity for people to walk around to different “stations” and learn from the presenters. At the end, participants were given prescription bottles with mock prescription labels which were used to practice finding different elements such as patient name, discard date, and directions for use.

2008 Breakfast

Congratulations and heartfelt thanks to everyone who made the 2008 Breakfast the best Literacy Source breakfast ever!

A festive and inspiring May Day breakfast with the theme “Join the Great Conversation” brought in more than $40,000 -- $5,000 above our goal!

Thanks especially to our generous sponsors, whose contributions covered event costs so that every dollar donated will directly support Literacy Source’s thriving instructional programs. Kudos also to the wonderful table hosts who filled the room with their friends and colleagues who are now Literacy Source supporters too.

Bravo to everyone!

Theo Chocolate Tour

Ashley at Theo Chocolates provided a behind-the-scenes peek into the production of the only organic and fair trade chocolate in North America - located right here in Fremont! Literacy Source students from the ABE and ESL programs joined in the fun.  Students were shown every step of the chocolate-making process, from bean-sampling to packaging.  Chocolate flavors range from the bitterness of pure chocolate from Ghana, Madagascar and Venezuela to the zestiness of the coconut curry bar. Several students and staff reported a lack a sleep later on that evening.
